FW: - The Hon. Alannah MacTiernan -- Are streetcars what Rockingham desires?

Further to Bill Bolton's posting about a idea to run 'streetcars' through
the sandy streets of Rockingham, WA (35km south of Perth), here is a media
release from the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure (AKA Transport).
In the release is a link to the web page set up to give more info.
This idea is to quell unrest caused by the government pulling the pin on an
option to bring the Perth-Mandurah Railway into the middle of Rockingham via
tunnels - no mean feat on a coastal sand plain at sea level with ground
water 1 metre below the surface - no wonder 'streetcars' are seen as a
better option!
On the matter of nomenclature - tram has always been the Australian term -
as was the term railway. However, since we have been alegedly annexed by the
United States of McDonalds (ABSOLUTELY no disrespect to our American friends
intended), American terms are coming into vogue - the former Western
Australian Government Railways (Westrail) is now known as the Australian
Western Railroad, I have seen a level crossing warning sign somewhere that
cautions drivers about the 'railroad crossing' and now our trams are
streetcars by Her Majesty's Honourable Ministers.
What next? Shunting bells on locomotives? Ooops- thats been done - National
Rails NR class locos have a really american sounding bell for shunting
movements - when you hear it you almost start looking for a big Union
Pacific steamer or something!
Cheers
