Emergency rope.

Regarding the second trolley rope,in about 1963/4 I think it was an
old trammie called Danny White fell from the roof of a tram while
rescuing a pole with a broken rope.I don't know if he slipped or
somehow earthed himself on the route number box and copped 600v.The
upshot was that he was killed. He was a Hanna Street driver and I
think the incident happened in Spencer St. at Flinders on the
down, could be wrong but this is what comes back to me.I reckon the
cars would have been run in straight away, there would have been a
Depot meeting and a resolution would have been put and passed that no
Traffic staff climb on the roof of cars. That would have eventually
become Union policy via a General Meeting. The Board would not have
agreed to this initially but eventually have agreed to fit a second
rope with a slip ring so it could slide up and down the trolley
pole. There were no hassles about shed and breakdown staff going on
the roof as they did it routinely and knew how to do it properly. The
second rope also made it fairly easy to swing the front pole into the
trailing position if the rear pole was damaged, driver and connie each
had a rope and stood either side of the car.Certain connies I would
have happily wrapped the spare rope around their neck.I have a
feeling that the dispute with the Board was a fairly bitter one.I
wasn't on the job at the time so details may be a bit approximate but
I am confident that the essential story is accurate.I'll see if I can
find out a bit more.Regards to all,Peter Bruce.
