Roy,

I remember all that, great fun, and If I remember correctly you gave me some rather interesting rides as well, I do recall we used to wonder if the points were still set or whether any one came up and changed them, just imange what would have happened if they were not,  Whilst on this subject can I ask that all members of the group take a thought remember the chap who used to operate and own this little set up, "Richard Youll" a Tram driver who I had the pleasure of working with as a Connie many times, and spent number of hours working on the set up at Toolen Vale, a chap who not only loved his trams and was very very dedicated to Trams and the Tramways,  also loved motor bikes, he was on his way home one night and was struck down by some twit in a car, this was quite a few years ago and the last report I heard was he would never drive a tram again, and he sold the stuff at Toolen Vale.  Roy do you have any photos perhaps we could share, I know I lost all the video footage and photos in the fire?

Steve D.

I visited Toolern Vale one in early 1992 with Steve Dalton of this group. Quite a set up. I have vivid memories of almost strangling myself when the pole rope on one of the electric trolleys dewired and wrapped itself around my rather large throat whilst Steve was hurtling the trolley down hill at max speed. Invigorating stuff!

That car was built by Richard Youle, one time tram driver at South
Melb.
He used to run it at Albion Park in NSW and I have seen pics of it on
temp track in a street in the "Gong".
When he came down to Melbourne he bought it with him and ran it at
Toolern Vale with Barry Neilson's toastrack car.
Also it visted many events in Melbourne as in Hanna Street and Kew
running on temporary track.
There were also two powered trolleys with poles and two diesel locos
and some wagons at Toolern Vale.
Jim Baynes built the line and the boys electrified it, powering it
from ex VR locomotive starting batteries that Richard bought cheap
from VR Spotswood reclamation depot.
Motors were rewound bus generators.
Overhead was often suspended from trees.
The two cars were able to run in multiple.
A third car was under construction by John Murdoch,an ex Brunswick
trammie and member of the Diamond Valley Railway... It was an MMTB X1
about 14 feet long.
When Toolern Vale folded, this car, half built, was going to the tip,
but it was saved at the last minute and hopefully it may be completed
and run on a line being developed in Bendigo.
Barry has sold his toastrack to this operation.
One loco and the track from Toolern Vale was bought by the late
Collin Hirst of Drouin, I believe the track was moved on to
Queensland.
I have pics "In the files" and will post when found.........
