The Tramways MK VIs had automatic chassis lubrication, an oil pressure
system which worked well enough but it was so messy under there that any Mk
VI had to be steam cleaned before the guys would work on it.

They were just black underneath.

As I understand it, all the lubrication tolerances were set up for oil so
there could be problems trying to grease some fixtures. Best to leave the
old system in place even though it is dirty. I think you could adjust the
rate of lubrication and I doubt the Tramways ever did cut them back when
they were over lubricating.

Actually, I do sleep and well but when you live in the bush and it's going
to go 40C you get up real early and get your work done before your Irish
genes shut down in the heat.

There was always the option of driving it in "mono".

In about 1980 (from memory), the M&MTB in its wisdom decided that second
gear take-off in auto mode was causing too much wear on the second gear
bands. That's after 14 years in service, mind you.

So they re-programmed the CAV (I think) controller to pick up 1st gear in
auto. That made take offs very rough. The jerk levels were high and the
"events" basically uncontrollable. It gave us smooth drivers the shits so
we
started taking off in 2nd gear mono, then shifting into auto mode. They
changed the controller so even if you selected 2nd mono it would take off
in
1st.

It was a piss-off because it became impossible to drive smoothly, but the
M&MTB wouldn't hear us and did not respond to our complaints on the
grizzle
sheet.

I suspect that someone yanked or disconnected the card on the ones you
have
driven to get around that problem.

Dave Oxley, ex M&MTB Footscray depot electrician was the tech god on those
gearboxes. I am still in contact with him. It would probably be possible
to
get him to reprogramme them to run the way they did so well for so many
years if anyone is interested. But they would probably have to bring the
bus to him. He'd be the best man in Oz on those things.

If anyone wants to restore that part of them, and that's the way they
operated when they were the backbone of Footscray and Doncaster
operations,
let me know and I'll talk with Dave.

No, I never drove the Mk6's in service but plenty of times since.
There are two at Bylands and Collin's narrowed ex Moreland one at
Drouin.

In New Zealand that model was kown as the Reliance. Wellington,
Christchurch and New Plymouth operated them in large numbers with
several styles of bodies.

I think the auto feature was disabled toward the end of the MMTB
units,
I always had to use the gears.
