Actually, Peter, a lot of the drivers liked them because they got to sit
down on a fairly comfortable seat.
Our Z trams are of two quite different types and the Z-1s had ASEA electrics
and trucks with metalastik suspension that rode like honey wagons.
They also had quite a high floor, no low platforms and a conductor's throne
behind the motorman which meant increased dwell time as passengers queued
out the doors waiting for the old fashioned and painfully slow ticket system
to wheeze into action once again.
Also, the disc parking brakes had a habit of locking up on hot days which
greatly added to the fun.
They were pieces of shit.
The Z-2s had different trucks with much better suspension.
It wasn't until the A and B class that we got away from PAYE and back to
using all doors that dwell time reduced to the level we had 50 years + ago
with the W-class trams and their roving conductors.
I'm glad those trams were built in Melbourne but they weren't the best
looking things that ever ran on rails, especially the A and B class which
look like shoe boxes on rails.
Oh, well.

I didn't realize that so many (most if not all?) Zs were out of
service. When were they introduced? Seems like they were M's
answer to the MUNI Boeings. I know from this group that they
were likewise not popular with platform staff.
