What is 980's current state like? I heard TMSV were keen on getting her operational again. How would this be done, would she get her old trucks back with 1041 getting a set of Z trucks, or would the trucks have to come from another PCC source, such as north america?

Does anyone know how much damage was done through the cutting of heating ducts in the floor of 980 (and any other modification for that matter) while she was used for tests in the early 1970's?

Greg,

I liked the VR tram that we had at Essendon, too. It rode well and the K-35
controller didn't have any more notches than the car really needed.

It seemed a good car even if you did tend to go a bit cross-eyed driving
while sitting down.

Hi Roy,

I certainly do recall the ride qualities of 980, having run it on a fan
trip
in 1966 (actually, I was 16 and the Inspector running the trip, let all of
us have a turn), she rode the same as 1041, as the trucks under 1041 came
from 980!

Actually, the time that Graeme was trying to bribe/blackmail/beg to get
the
table that ran 1041 on Footscray, it was fully fitted out with Z controls,
they were ripped out in storage because they were spares, hopefully, when
they start retiring the Z1's, 1041 will be made operable again,
externally,
she is fully restored again with all windows replaced and she lives in the
paint shop at Preston workshops, the interior still needs a lot of work
yet
though.

I also ran 52 and 53 in fact WGB and I had 52 on it's last ever fan trip,
it
was retired about a week later, I liked them, I even had a way of sitting
in
them so I could see around the centre pillar, why they put the driver's
seat
where they did always confounded me.

Greg
Has anyone recollections of the riding quality of 980?
