The Brisbane Tramway Museum did a similar thing with its horse car in the early 1970's, firstly at the Chermside terminus in Gympie Rd and then at the Belmont terminus. To this day, around 1km of double track in mass concrete and median reservation can still be seen along Old Cleveland Rd in Carina (even though the terminus was called 'Belmont')

One of the very first tramway vehicles to be preserved at Ferrymead Christchurch NZ was this horse car 43.
It was possible in the late 50's to run the car at Papanui as some track remained.
