Rightly this medium is called the World Wide Web, and so is available
to ANYBODY...........Information can be used by friend or foe.
It certainly should make you think before committing your thoughts to
cyberspace.

Free speech is OK just as long as it does not upset anybody !!!

I wonder if there is a sort of copyright on the contents of groups
like these so they could not be used against a person.

Any thoughts on this ????

Hi, gang!

I doubt whether the messages on Yahoogroups are copyrightable in and of
themselves.

However, I find it reprehensible that Greg was called on the carpet by Yarra
Trams management for merely stating an opinion in a forum which discusses
trams in Australia and New Zealand, and has nothing to do with his employer.
As a trammie, Greg was very outspoken. His views on the Citadis were his,
but I have the feeling that the sentiment expressed by him was shared by
many of his fellow trammies. If, as I suspect, there was no labor
(particularly motorman) input into the design of Melbourne's Citadis trams,
then how can Yarra Trams management state unequivocally to its employees
that "This is what we got for you. You will say nothing but good about it,
or else we will punish you." This is the impression I am getting. It is a
hypocritical position.

Over on SFMuniHistory, my first group, many people in Muni management read
the messages. A similar situation would be if management, which is
hell-bent on getting rid of its last Boeings as soon as possible, were to
punish me for wanting to save a Boeing (despite the fact that there are many
within Muni who have the same viewpoint, and despite the fact that I have
hated them in the past) because it goes against what management wants.
Nevertheless, as an operator, I'm not afraid to express my views. They may
have cost me a promotion, because someone may have remembered something I
wrote to the SF Chronicle about the Muni Metro ATCS disaster long before
there ever was a SFMuniHistory discussion group and blocked my promotion to
Inspector despite high marks and a proven attitude in keeping streetcar
service moving.

Politics within a transit organization sucks. And I see "transit
professionals" going around dispensing platitudes to a gullible public--you
know, things like "it will get better when the new trams are running".
Meanwhile the real "transit professionals", the trammies and the connies, go
out and do an honest day's work in a hostile environment. And they don't
even have management on their side when something goes wrong.

Will the Citadis turn out to be the savior of Melbourne transport? Or will
it be a despised turkey relegated to the back of the barn, like some other
failed classes of trams? Only time will tell. In the meantime, I support
Greg in his stand. If, indeed, there is a snitch on this group and I find
out, that person will be dealt with accordingly.
