Partially true, actually, all the W2's were built by then, the W'5 etc,
would have looked like Y1's but, you are right with the time it took and the
Y1 cost half as much again as a W5. What a shame, emagine what the
development of that wonderfull design would have lead too.

The W2 class tram fleet would not have been so large and the tram
scene in Melbourne would certainly be a lot different,had the
proposal to build a fleet of Y class trams for the Collin st
electrification gone ahead.The only reason that it did not proceed
was the time it took to build a Y class tram being six weeks,compared
with a W2 which could be built in one to two weeks.
