On the matter of W4 brakes, one reason they have such a bad rap is that they
were withdrawn from service prior to the large-scale introduction of
synthetic brake shoes. PETS' W4 674 is currently having the brake rigging
modified to take synthetic shoes al la W2. Although we don't operate at a
speed or frequesncy where the old braking system is a problem, it would be
beneficial to ensure that all of our cars have braking characteristics so
that drivers don't need to adjust their driving habits too much.
674 has been out of serice a few years with a blown motor and other
mechanical problems. It is hoped she will be
