sheds... the car sheds and storage tracks have all gone now, with the
area covered over with an air rights development

Didn't I read somewhere that the "blue" asbestos in the
Gloucesters was so dangerous that they buried the bodies
whole in old rock quarries when they were retired?

There was a major safety protest by rail workers about the asbestos in
the cars circa 1978, that lead to their withdrawal from suburban
service. Quite a few Harris cars were extensively refurbished and are
now used by for loco hauled middle distance commuter and "country"
services beyond the range of the Melbourne suburban electric system.
I don't know what happened to the rest, perhaps they were buried?!?
