Fair enough. Personally I'm not concerned what the organistion is
called - just that it is effective - in both name and deeds! Getting
hung up on the details - like voltage and pans/frogs, etc etc etc
etc, is what the detractors want. So see the big picture. Push the
principles! Get on with it!

I agree with the need for such a group and even the general idea of
but it needs to be shorter so it sticks in people's minds toincrease
branding power so "Melbourne Tramways Trust" would be much better. The other
is too long and not necessary even though it plays to thehistorical name of
the M&MTB.memorable and
Most people didn't even know what M&MTB stood for.
Any organisation we set up to improve things here should be
obfuscating with extraneous words/concepts in a title would not bean
auspicious start.in

Subject: [TramsDownUnder] Re: Running Ws & Other Old Cars In ServiceI'm following this thread keenly. It may be of interest that here
forAuckland there is the recently incorporated the "Auckland Electric
Tramways Trust": brief to act as a supporter and "ginger" group
MOTATAk's tramway (and other urban transport) heritage - main focus
Tramwaysat present. The name is a play on the old Auckland Electric
publicCo Ltd (which coy has recently been reactivated by a member).
If a tinpot place like Auckland (with essentially no effective
gunzelstransport) can get some folk together, why not Melbourne. Why not
the "Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Trust"? Or are the
groupin control? And btw, I am the NZ member of the COTMA executive, so
you'd better watch out, ha ha ha.

By the way, don't sell yourself short, as far as I'm concerned
thingare anhonourary Melbournianenough time
GregWhile I am not a full time Melbourian, I have and do spendthere to be able to understand what is going on there. One
forthat isdefinitely missing in Melbourne is fan and enthusiast support
comesthetrams. Oh yeah, they all do a lot of talking, but when it
thereto "Put Upor Shut Up", they shut up. It is almost like Philadelphia -
andarezillions of fans, but none of them can get their act together.Melbournedrastically needs an organization like Market Street Railway inS.F. topull together most of the fansto put pressure on the Government
while Itheoperating tram companies. There is a tremendous amount ofinfighting amongtram fans inAustralia, and getting one faction to agree withanother is likemediating a war cease-fire. Some like the Ws while others hatethem andcall the ones who do like them idiots, some like the new cars, whilecertain others (mainly a few in Sydney - and I'm sure many willknow who Imean) think that only their views are valid. And to Greg,
majoritycertainly respect you and your views, I do think that the
meof yourpassengers would much rather be on a tram than a gutterliner. It's justthat the apathy in Melbourne is legendary. And don't even get
thatstarted onfare evasion. The Government and the operators have brought
to aentirefiasco on themselves, and short of changing the entire system
withPAYEoperation with front entrance and center exit cars (and evenembracing that"awful American and Canadian system" of fareboxes - which doeswork even onsuper heavy loading routes - and has for eons), the fare evasionwill notstop. Melbourne had a chance to go to a PAYE farebox system
peoplethe Z1and Z2 trams, let it slip a little with the Z3s, and thenabsolutely blewit with the As and Bs. One man operation cannot, and in myopinion, willnot ever work with all those wide open doors. It has become asport to seehow often you can ride without ever paying a fare. I know
thewho havenot paid a fare in three years! It is remarkably easy to beat
The "officialsystem, with just a little bit of effort and inconvenience.
isline"fare evasion rate of approx. 12% is absurd - all one has to do
have noride alot and it is obvious that well over 50% of tram passengers
onlyintention of buying a ticket, and if they do have one it is
to theto be usedwhen inspectors get on the tram. When one does get on, there isalways amad dash to the validators and ticket machines. Anyway, back
legssubject -- All the Melbourne fans have to get together and puttheirmoneyand their efforts where their mouths are. There are 200 Ws atNewport andPreston just waiting for a chance to get out and stretch their
backagain.200 extra trams would draw a whole heck of a lotof passengers
