The last Syndey cable tram ran in 1904 on the King Street Cable Line.
An excellent history of this line is contained in the Watsons Bay
Line by David Keenan, published in about 1989/1990. A similar history
of the North Shore cable line is given by the same author in the
North Sydney Lines, published some time earlier.
The best history of the Melborne system, reputedly the largest system
under a simgle owner in the world is Mind the Curve by John Keating
1971, republished in the early 1990's.

Sydney had them until 1900. They had two isolated lines.
Melbourne had cable trams until 1940. Melbourne had one of the
systems in the world, and, they like to say, the best designed. Ihave an
article about them on my web site:and last

Dunedin, NZ had them from 1881 until 1957. Dunedin was the first
city outside of San Francisco to have them. The Roslyn Tramway wasthe
first to use a pull curve. I've had a bad time finding informationabout
these lines.Their
Wellington, NZ still has a funicular that they call a cable car.
museum has a nice web site:trams in

Does anyone out there have any first hand memories of the cable
Melbourne or Dunedin? How about second hand memories fromparents,
grandparents, or friends? I'd be happy to include them on my site.http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
