Phuds and Flagons

A New Zealander who enjoyed an ale in the days before
Gunzelism was invented ,
used a device called a "Jar, Flagon, or half
G."
This handy container held half a gallon of your
favorite brew.
It was made of clear glass so you could inspect the
ingredients looking for foreign bodies, sedement , live swimming
thingies......etc.
The pubs used to close at 6pm, so you had to make sure you
had your "jar / s" filled before you went home.
They were equiped for multiple
operation................... I normally used a coupled set of two.
You could either swap two clean ones from home, or have
you own filled at the bar which was much better.
The jar would be plugged with a stout cork and a screw
lid.
Consumtion could be later that night, or next day if
pubs were closed on Sunday.
It did not matter if they were not chilled...room
temperature was just fine.
Most important pubs had their own flagons embellished with
their insignia .
Such was the TRAMWAY HOTEL in Adelaide Road
Wellington New Zealand on tram route 3 and 4 to
Kilbirnie, Lyall Bay and Seatoun.
I scored a few of the decals back then... thought you
might like to see one.
