Ah yes, the Haymarket!

That would be the corner where Elizabeth St, Flemington Rd, Peel St and
Royal Parade converge at the big roundabout with the big Australian flag.

Does anyone but the inner circle of tram drivers and people like us have
any idea about what location that term refers to???

The actual haymarket closed in the early 1950s and the site was used for
the dental hospital. That's now a vacant building and is intended to be
the site for the new Peter McCallum cancer hospital.

Could perhaps "thinking like a passenger" include using landmark names
that might be intelligible to said passengers?

Here's a pic - it's not good, but a bit unusual, because there's no flag
on the big flagpole. Perhaps the 'standard raiser' was on summer holidays.
