Copyright in photographs was different. Yes copyright in written works, artistic works etc was 50 years from death of author (in most cases), but photographs used to be 25 years from the date of the taking of the pic. Then it was changed to 50 years from date of taking.

Then we joined the dreaded Free Trade Agreement with USA (don't get me started on that joke) and part of that was that we had to adopt the Americans more "commercial" copyright laws. Copyright in photos will be extended to 75 years.

If I read it correctly, there's a phase in period that means for the next 23 years the copyright expiry date will stay fixed at 1 Jan 1955, then on 1 Jan 2030 the expiry date will begin to move forward again. I think that's how it works. I'll check the Copyright Act later in the week when I have a little more time to trawl through it.

More information please. I was under the impression that copyright expired 50 years after the death of the author.
