RE: Adelaide H class disposals.
  Kym Smith

I suppose in some ways that is the point of my questions. If the new cars
had been classified 'I Class', and the first one numbered 382, the
historical precedent would have been obvious, but in reality there is no
valid reason other than historical precedent for the new cars to have been
numbered or classified in this form.

As John points out, there is usually a reason behind any of these sort of
decisions, and they may not have anything to do with past precedent or
common transport precedents. Graeme's suggestion of the 'S' representing
"Stadtbahn" could also be well be on the money.

The numbering may well just match into whatever computer system
TransAdelaide use for their rostering or servicing, or their asset number in
the TransportSA system.

Interestingly, when Pengelleys were building the H's, the MTT hadn't decided
on the numbers that the H's would carry, so the components were stamped and
identified by alphabet rather than numbers, with 351 being car A, 352 being
car B, etc, etc. This was 'discovered' during the restoration of H 360 (car
J) at St Kilda, and subsequently confirmed on components on the trams that
were refurbished at All Transport. All other Adelaide cars seem to have
been built with their number known at the time of building.

At the end of the day, it really doesn't make any difference, it is simply
just interesting to try to find out why, so that the reason for the
selection of numbers and classification can become part of the history too.

There doesn't have to be a reason why. Somebody makes a decision in their
job and that is that. Historical precedent doesn't come into it. Records are
usually archived after one or two years, and thrown out after five years
these days.

For example, I remember meeting the guy that set up the original 3 zone
system in Melbourne. The colours Yellow for zone 1 and Blue for zone 2 were
his kids school colours. He asked a co-worker "What colour should he use for
Zone 3?", and the person responded "Any shit colour." So that is why zone 3
tickets were Brown for many years and the Yellow and Blue live on to this
very day!

This is a true story,

Cheers

Hello Kym.

I am not sure why the Numbering starts at 101, i will see if someone at work
knows the reason why.

It just seems to be a bit strange skipping so many of the letters, unless it
represented something like 'S'ervice fleet or something. In that style of
classification, 'H' could then represent 'H'eritage.

In terms of the numbering, starting at 101 is also puzzling. Does this
somehow fit into TransportSA's fleet numbering?

Kym.

I am not sure what it stands for, but that is the CLASSIFICATION that the
New Trams have been given.

Hello to All.

The letter "S" is the Official Classification that has been given to the New
Adelaide Trams.

As far as i know, the "S" Class Numbers start from 101, as there will be 11
New Sets, as to when we

get all of the New Trams.

So far, we have 2 New Sets at the Tram depot (Nos. 101 and 102).

Where has the 'S' Class classification come from? Is it an official
designation, or just something dreamed up by gunzels?

How about 357 or 358? Did I miss something here?
