The bridge replaced the old separate road and tram bridges.

The view looks East across the river. The old road bridge is visible at
left. One lane of the tramway only trestle bridge construcetd during WW
II has already been demolished.

VR52 carries an auxiliary destination board imploring us to "Shop Early"
with a picture of a bearded gentleman in a red coat.

The pic also illustrates the reason some drivers so disliked the VR cars
- they did tend to make one go cross-eyed!
