Re: Former Kalgoorlie trams auctioned

Evening, Hunslet, et al,

There are some 20+ year-old images of near-derelict Kalgoorlie bodies in
the archive:

This image of No2, looks maybe 30 years old. If that’s the case, another
few decades of deterioration may have had it end up as the right-hand
carbody in the auction image. I base that on the cream belt rail and other
traces of cream paint on the car, along with the missing end window frames.

I suspect that the first image in this link is the ex-racecourse body, with
another decade or so of weathering of the already-weathered cream paint
seen in the first-linked image. The Masonite panels at the near end match
the Masonite panels at the far end of the car.

I’m going to make a guess that the second body in this link is the
left-hand carbody in the auction image. While it made it inside for a
while, it looks like the restoration didn’t get far. The Kalgoorlie mine
museum volunteers probably realised that it was going to take a lot more to
rebuild the car than finances and skills allowed, and the rebuild stalled.
It looks like part of the number 3 can be seen in the auction image, above
the left-hand end saloon window, matching that in the second link.

So, I’m going to guess that the bodies are No3 and No2.

I was born in Kalgoorlie on 24 July 1971, nearly 20 years too late for
trams, but coincidentally the day that the last regularly-scheduled NSWGR
steam-hauled steam passenger service ran in Singleton. So, while Kalgoorlie
is a long way from my home in Junee, the interest remains.

Cheers,
Matt
