Re: Melbourne and Sydney tram patronage
  TP

Sydney's new light rail is basically a short-distance and feeder network
operating in heavily populated areas. The busiest section of all is
actually the CBD spine along George Street, Sydney's equivalent of the
Swanston Street corridor. The lines were all planned to address some of the
busiest street corridors, which explains their patronage.

No line is more than 13 km long. They're not really long suburban lines
like you have in Melbourne but, at most, short suburban lines. For such
short distances, it's obviously more convenient than a railway network
because the stops are closer together. For the longer distance work, all of
these lines are being or are already supplemented by connecting metro lines
and suburban rail lines.

The IWLR connects to metro and/or trains at Central, Lewisham (sort of!)
and Dulwich Hill. CSELR connects to metro and/or trains at Central and at
points along the Sydney CBD spine to Circular Quay and will in future also
connect to the proposed SE metro at Randwick. Parramatta Stage 1 connects
to Parramatta and Westmead metro and suburban stations and State 2 will
connect to Parramatta and Olympic Park metro and suburban stations.
