Might I suggest that it may be more a privacy screen than a sun screen. There were buildings from which one could look down into the signal cabin and there may have been activities occurring in said cabin which would not be normally openly displayed in polite societyJ

Would I be correct in saying that the Tramway Signal Box in that photo is now the one located in Tramway Avenue at the Sydney Tramway Museum, Loftus?
