The dummy was the grip car. All Melbourne grip cars were open and all trailers closed. Sydney likewise.

Yes they are William. Think they used to call them dummy cars. They appear to be the 8 window version, probably disposed of by the Melbourne Tramways Board in the early 1930s when they were busy electrifying their lines.

Just printed this—from the Weekly Times of 22 December, 1934 and captioned 'At Upper Macedon (Victoria), this residence is built with old trams'. They look like ex Melbourne cable trams and were probably destroyed in the Macedon bush fires in the 1980s?
