Death of David Mehlman
  Roderick Smith

David was well known in railway and tramway hobbies, as a career tramway officer and for his travel passion.
After prolonged ill health, he died in hospital on Wednesday 31 May, and was buried on Thursday 1 June.
The service is online at https://www.mck.org.au/recordings/1685593800000_108668
but this will be deleted automatically on Wednesday or Thursday.
The key section are the eulogies, starting at about 9.30 and running for 10 minutes.

I can't recall when I first met David.  As with so many in the hobby, you feel that you have known each other forever.
He was an occasional contributor to Rail News Victoria, which I ran from 1989 to 2014, often in conjunction with Peter Carwardine (ARHS archivist).
Most of our conversations were on the small-scale tours through this era.  My memory may be muddled, but I think that he travelled with all of the groups: AREA, RTA, GSRS, ARHS lunch outings, and the now-rare tram tours.
David was born in 1953, and was interested in railways from an early age.  At the end of schooling, he spent a year in Israel.  He became a tram driver.  I don't know if he reached inspector status before the reorganisation with privatisation.  He then became a timetabling officer with Yarra Trams, working on services for special events.  He travelled overseas, but I'm not sure how extensively.  I recall (possibly wrongly) that he had been on one of the few ARHS overseas tours.  He did travel privately.
In recent years he was plagued with medical troubles, but always coped cheerfully.  They were not allowed to stop him from enjoying his travels.

I will have photos, but not easy to find fast.
