Don't risk using it at an unattended station or on a tram or bus because if it is expired then you will run the risk of being caught. The ticket checkers can turn up anywhere without warning, I'm not sure how you would go being from interstate with an expired card.
The other option is if it has been registered then just contact the myki people and they can tell you if it has expired or not. But you would still need to visit a manned station or office to get a new one. But at least you would be forewarned.
