Four more years! Let’s give the other bloke a go

March 24, 2023

Claiming that Dominic Perrottet deserves another go because he has a courageous vision is facile. The /Herald’s/ editorial (“One leader offers a more ambitious vision https://www.smh.com.au/politics/nsw/both-leaders-are-decent-smart-and-capable-but-one-offers-a-more-ambitious-vision-for-nsw-20230321-p5ctwp.html”, March 24) skates over the NSW Liberal government’s terrible track record and highlights a couple of promises that are seen as big picture. It attacks Minns’ policies as small targets but grudgingly admires his pragmatic approach. The /Herald/ is dismissive of Minns’ giving a well-deserved pay rise to nurses, firefighters and teachers by saying it might be costly to taxpayers if the productivity gains aren’t realised. We can already see how many valuable workers in these sectors are leaving. A pay rise is the first step in clawing back productivity. Even weighing up all that is said in the editorial I can’t see how it came to its conclusion to back Perrottet.

As a long-term subscriber and reader of the /Herald/ I am quite used to your conservative stance, but your editorial might have mentioned the badly handled Ruby Princess fiasco, the Gladys Berejiklian developer scandals, the serious watering down of environmental laws, the surge of privatisation, the outsourcing of transport manufacturing and the deliberate defunding of public education. Although I realise the latter enables private schools to lavishly boast of their ‘superiority’ in constant advertising. All in all I prefer the Cathy Wilcox summation of tomorrow’s electoral status.

The /Herald /recommends the re-election of the Perrottet government because the premier should be given another four years to show what he can do for the state. I think the majority in that state know very well what another four years of the Liberals and Nationals running NSW would be like – more privatisation, more underfunding of our hospitals and public schools, more underpaying our valuable frontline workers/teachers/nurses, more backroom deals for the big end of town and Liberal Party toadies. It’s time to give the other bloke a go, whatever your reservations on his stance over cashless gaming might be.

I am sure this letter will not be published, but I have to express my complete shock and disappointment that the /Herald/ has taken the editorial position of supporting the re-election of a hopelessly compromised and incompetent state government. Obviously, the Editor is not reading the letters pages.

Thank you so much for today’s cartoon. I was so gladdened to see it on the opposite page of the whole page endorsement of the present Liberal government. It was a beacon of sanity and hope to counteract the Editor’s viewpoint.
