The reason that Budapest has such long trams is that the Germans blew up
the Danube bridges in 1945, cutting in half the looped tram system. Unable
to run so many trams due to having to reverse at stubs, they made the trams
longer in order to retain the capacity. And longer and longer as patronage
grew..
