But the flanges are supposed to touch at the crossing.  This is far
quieter thAn the bang from the wheel treads missing the rail AT THE
CROSSING AND THEN BANGING AGAINST THE RAIL WHEN THEY CROSS TO THE NEXT
SECTION OF RAIL.  standard METHOD FOR REDUCING NOISE

the MMTB USED TO BE VERY GOOD AT THAT, EspecialLY WHEN THEY TRIED MAKING
THE Ramp at the bottom of the flange way flexibly supported.  MAJOR
NOISE REDUCTION BUT APPARENTLY A BIT HIGH IN MAINTENANCE, SO THEY
REVERTED TO USING PERMANENTLY FITTED RAMPS. still BETTER THAN THE
CROSSINGS WITHOUT RAMPS, AND DEAFENING WHEN USED BY A W2.
