My last ride down George Street a few weeks back, watching the console over the drivers shoulder , I observed the system switching to traction battery power a couple of times on the way to the Quay. As the APS control cubicles are under the road/tracks and don't have foot path side access, the road has to be closed to all traffic so they can lift the lids and access the equipment.

I'm guessing this the main reason the cars are fitted with traction batteries, as they knew from the onset that failed APS modules would be difficult to replace due to their location under ground and under the tracks, so they fitted the cars with a 'plan B' to provide service continuity until a closure can be scheduled to effect repairs to the APS segments.

This must be doing wonders for the operating costs.
