Re: Ballarat Tramway Museum in the early days.

Hi all,

A good description of the early days at the Ballarat Tramway Museum would be "rugged, with plenty of mud". These shots give some idea of how the trams were transferred from the old SEC depot to the new BTPS depot.

The shots are:

04631--Tram 27 before it was derailed and moved into the depot via a temporary track, 15 July, 1972. Despite the trolley pole being on the wire, there was no power in the overhead; that came later, along with a lot of 'blow-ins' who were not seen beforehand (sound familiar?).

04632--Trams 27 and 28 in Wendouree Parade, about to be derailed and moved into the depot via a temporary track, 15 July, 1972.

04647--Bogie trams 38 and 40 being winched along the temporary track towards the BTPS depot, 23 July, 1972.

04648--Bogie trams 38 and 40 near the BTPS depot, surrounded by plenty of mud and sitting on very temporary track, 23 July, 1972. A well known tramway identity can be seen running next to tram 40 in the distance.

Cheers,
Andrew Cook (who helped out in the early days at Ballarat and remembers that bull-in-a-china shop contractor that almost wrecked one of the single truck trams when 'moving' it).
