The outcrop was a large sand hill. It was easier to go around it at the time with mainly manual labour. It was removed later and the line was straightened. The second trailer car in the south facing photo is believed to be an"Ambrose" former combination steam car later used as a trailer.

A beautiful picture. Here is one taken looking the other way, i.e. towards the south. A Tyrrells image, published several times. It is apparent how the line curved around a small outcrop which was later removed and the line straightened. A gala event is under way at the beach.

The attached pic showed up on facebook.
It is apparently from the collection of the National Library of Australia and dates from 1895.
Sydney has a long history of running trains in the streets.
