Re: Costs of Sydney’s driverless train conversion outweigh the benefits

In the course of their micro-analysis, the authors don't seem to have
consulted the planning documents that would have made them aware that the
Bankstown line is part of a new metro route to Liverpool and the West Metro
is stage one of a metro line to WSA and Bradfield. Conversions of legacy
lines, or sections of them, to metro have happened and still happen
overseas. It's obviously a little more expensive than a greenfield project,
but if it has to be done in order to complete a major scheme, it's
worthwhile.

Augmentation of legacy systems around the world is now practically at a
standstill. Automated rapid transit is the standard for new urban commuter
railways. It's harder for Melbourne and Brisbane, with their blended lines,
to make a change, but they already have an advantage with their more
efficient single deck trains and works to provide new lines for capacity
relief are underway in both cities. Melbourne is also building a new
automated rapid transit loop line. Perth is already a metro in all but name.

The journey times for the Bankstown line metro have been available on the
Sydney Metro website for years. It wouldn't tale the authors much to work
out what the timetable will be. It will be a quicker, more frequent trip
than the existing, with the benefit of all services stopping at all
stations (yet no slower than existing semi-express trains). The benefit to
users of the line is not addressed by the authors at all. The benefit of
freeing up more train paths on the city circle for the suburban system in
general is also not mentioned. Can't rely on academics to give us a good
background picture nowadays.
