Hi Greg,
In their day, the trams would have been diverted to the parallel Queen St but that can’t be done now with the buses as Queen St is a mall and the other parallel streets, Ann, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Mary, Margaret and Alice are all one way.
Cheers,
Mick in 27 deg Brisbane

It does not appear that the buses could be or were diverted. Essentially the bus system was brought to a halt for some considerable time.

But yes, of course, bus services can be diverted whereas an event like this would bring a tram line to a halt, unless it's a large system with alternative routes. That's why bustitution is such a big thing nowadays with these new tram systems that only have one or two linear routes, but no matrixes.
