Thanks, Matthew, for confirmation that the 'T-collector' that I had mentally 'invented' actually exists. Can you name some of the relevant enlightened systems?

I like your suggestion for a ' Sunday clause' in the operating contracts but imagine that getting one now would involve pushing a lot of the malodorous commodity up a steep incline.

More enlightened systems that have converted to pantograph operation allow pole equipped trams out with a simple reversible (thus protecting the heritage of the vehicle) alteration - they lock the ability of the pole to pivot and place a pantograph head over the skid/wheel. The pole then acts sort of like like a bow-collector.

The heritage car the then gets to get out of the museum and get some exercise, but with out the often some times major alteration of changing it to a pantograph collector and possibly having to make changes that effect the heritage value of the item.

I see the major issue in Melbourne is there is no incentive for the private operator to let the heritage fleet out and plenty of incentive not to. A fact of life is the vintage car is more likely to have some sort of failure and cause delays. The nature of the vintage 'tour' (tardy gunzels) will create delays. Those delays attract fines to the operator.

I suspect if the franchise agreement said 'let heritage fleet out on Sundays. You will not be penalised for any delay attributable to issues with the heritage fleet' and the situation would be VERY different.
