The Melbourne system suffers enormous political neglect that has been going
on for years, which is sad for an organisation that is highly professional
and knowledgeable and would be up with the best in the world if it was let
off the leash. This is in marked contrast to most of those great tram
systems in Europe that, over the last 20 years, have been lavished with
strong political support and, often, generous EU funding as well. I
wouldn't be putting the Melbourne system down, I'd be aiming at the
deadheads from both political sides that have occupied Vic Parliament house
for too many years and allowed the neglect to happen. Melbourne is the
Cinderella of the great tram systems.
