One quick (pedantic ?) correction, neither of those A class trams have
been refurbished.

288 has the current livery, but has not had the East Preston refurb.  If
it had the steps for roof access would be gone (not just sheeted over),
the paint around the destination box would be white  and the turning
indicators would be smaller - plus a few other noticeable changes.
