Re: Autumn in the GTCOTS St Kilda Road at Park Street (cont'd)Fred Tullberg

Gday Andrew,Peter,Yuri All

Fred Tullberg was the Depot Master,Boss,at Malvern when I was there 70-74
and he was the best Boss I ever worked for

I was sentenced to 3 months at Malvern by Lindsay East, the discipline officer
for being a naughty boy,in the boards opinion,I had been at Camberwell for 4 yrs
where we couldnt change from A to B shift or VV

I discovered that Malvern allowed shift changes, provided, you got 10 hrs off
between shifts so I stayed at Malvern as I was a bugger, unmarried then, for getting
up for Earlys so I swapped for Middles and Lates,I gave away Sundays to entice
drivers to swap

All went well till the early 70s when Glenhuntly got wind of the Malvern change
arrangements and changing from A to B shift or VV was stopped

I then had to do Earlys, and work Sundays, the rot set in and I sometimes slept in

Fred Tullberg would ring up and ask if I was coming to work and offer 8AM spare
which I gladly accepted,a drop out or being late wasent recorded on my record,
shift changed by managment

He also got another Driver ,usually from the dreaded Glenhuntly to give me the
occasional Sat off

In those days,we worked 6 days a week, inc a DOC due to staff shortages

Thanks ,Tassy Horton, the enlightened Union Rep

I didnt know about Freds card playing for big stakes, but card playing certainly
went on

I jumped before I was pushed as I felt bad trading on Freds good nature, covering
my sleeping in,resigning in  May 1974

Yuri,Fred Tullberg being a sparky after retirement is a surprise as AFAIK Depot Masters came up through Traffic, not through Workshops or Running Sheds, but I
suppose anything was poss
