Re: Autumn in the GTCOTS St Kilda Road at Park Street (cont'd)

Yuri and all there is a bit of a story about that Dorcas St shelter. Back
when South Melbourne/Hanna St was an all night depot there was a problem
with trammies getting into big card games in the mess room to the point
where some were losing big time. The Tramways Board then kicked the card
players out of the mess whereupon they decamped up the shed and then having
been moved on off M&MTB premises altogether they scooped up seat cushions
and moved to the Dorcas St. shelter. Dunno what happened after that, except
that there was always a sign up in the messroom. "Gambling on the Board's
Premises is strictly prohibited". The card games continued but only for
peanuts and when the all night trams finished up in I think the late '50s
South Melbourne was no longer a 24 hour depot. The shed was staffed 24
hours though, I think because R10 the breakdown truck was based there.

Regards to all TDUs,

Peter Bruce.
