Re: Vic Gov Tram Network Upgrades Announced

I know the real estate market has inflated Mark, but $10 million will still
buy you far more than a four bedroom house and in a very exclusive location
indeed on the east coast. On the other hand, it may well buy you the whole
of Adelaide, but I'm not up to scratch on that ;)

It does seem an extraordinary amount for a tram stop. It baffles me that
Victorian public transport investment always seems to be in little, barely
effective dribs and drabs, unlike the massive whole-system investments in
NSW. Both states should be equally rich - what's the problem? The tram
investment in Melbourne seems to be particularly mean. At that rate of
platform construction, full accessibility won't be reached until about the
23rd century. Another one is the obvious reluctance to bring the power
supply up to scratch, instead downscaling to smaller trams with batteries
in order to keep the operation going. Meanwhile, there's an obvious fleet
capacity problem and patronage has stagnated for a few years now, probably
hitting its head against the capacity ceiling. The system may be one of the
world's greatest, but political support for it seems utterly miserable, in
contrast to the dynamic progress being made in Europe tram systems for some
time now - route extensions and new routes, whole new fleets, major traffic
priority improvements and widespread expansion of accessibility.
