Frankston line: Level crossing removals Neerim Rd, Glen Huntly Rd Lucy Callander June 21, 2021 Caulfield Glen Eira Leader
A new tram stop and improved parking will help revamp a busy train station on the Frankston line. Check out the rest of the plan.

The project includes the removal of dangerous and congested level crossings at Neerim Rd, Murrumbeena and Glen Huntly Rd, Glenhuntly by lowering the rail line into a 1km long trench.

The new station will feature lowered platforms to better link public transport, shops and community areas and was designed to meet community feedback.
It will include six disabled parking spaces and three kiss and ride bays, bike cages and parking hoops.
There will be better lighting and security cameras will be installed throughout the precinct.

A bike and pedestrian path will also be created to connect Ormond and Caulfield.
Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) said taking out the Glen Huntly crossing would slash travel times for thousands of motorists and hundreds of trains and trams daily.
“Road users currently endure significant delays because the boom gates can be down for almost 60 per cent of the morning peak, as up to 40 trains run through the two crossings,” an LXRA spokesman said.
He said safety would also be significantly improved.
“Since 2016, there have been 12 near-misses at the Glen Huntly Road crossing, including 10 involving pedestrians.”
Glen Huntly also has one of Melbourne’s last remaining tram squares, and the manually operated level crossing requires trains to slow considerably – often delaying the more than 200 trams that pass through each day.
Oakleigh MP Steve Dimopoulos said the work would “make life easier for the thousands of people who travel through Glen Huntly every day”.
The level crossings are scheduled to be removed by 2023 making the Frankston line free of boom gates between Flinders St and Moorabbin station.
The entire project is expected to be finished in 2024.

* Starting a year early..ok but will it be completed on schedule/budget ? Don't forget the Andrews Government are in charge LOL.
* who will be looking after small shops and local traffic in this area i hope local and state Gov have plan for small shop operators or this area will be dead
* This is going to be a massive improvement for the Glen Huntly station area.
* Looking good and should lift that whole area which sadly has been in decline in recent years. Some of those empty and neglected shops and should be rebuilt into units retaining the ground level facade for historical reasons.
* 3 years of disruption. It will have a huge impact on small businesses. Many between the train line and Grange are already struggling.
* Of course the station should have been lowered at the same time as the others.  At the time, LXRA believed that it couldn't cope with the water table.  Years earlier, an attempt to elevate, was rejected by the locals, so the government took its bat and ball and retreated.  Now, LXRA is not only forced to lower, it has found that that is feasible.  However, the planned station is bleak and without soul, plagiarised from Jika Jika wing at Pentridge.  As noted by an earlier comment: LXRA is a law unto itself.  It has never once 'consulted' with anyone, it simply informs of what it is going to do, after the result is set in concrete.  It hates trees and vegetation with a passion.  Its first stage to any project is scorched earth.

ADF to steamroll bungled vaccine rollout as Victoria records one new local Covid case Mitch Clarke, Jack Paynter, Genevieve Alison, Jade Gailberger and Finn McHugh June 21, 2021 - 9:40PM
At least a thousand Victorians have escaped without a fine after a two-week police blitz on mask compliance on public transport.

At least a thousand Victorians have escaped with just a warning after being caught without a mask on public transport.
The two-week sting by police resulted in almost 50 fines being issued to travellers who refused to comply with the rule to wear a mask on trains, trams and buses.
The mask rule on public transport has been a constant feature since the start of Victoria’s tough three-month lockdown from July to October last year.
Those who fail to wear a mask face a $200 fine.
Victoria Police announced a crackdown on mask compliance last month after a noticeable decline in commuters adhering to the rule during the state’s run of 86 straight days without a locally acquired Covid-19 case.

The number of passengers on public transport wearing masks slipped to about 50 per cent in early May, down from 77 per cent in March.
Transit Division Superintendent Andrew Humberstone said mask compliance increased to about 95 per cent during the operation.
“There were just under 50 fines issued during the course of this operation, while over 1100 people were given a formal warning and provided with a mask to wear,” he told NCA NewsWire.
“The vast majority of public transport users were highly compliant.

“Initially, Operation Bane was established in response to growing community concern around diminishing mask compliance on public transport and it quickly became even more crucial to ensure everyone was wearing a mask as we battled another coronavirus outbreak in the state and restrictions tightened.”
Superintendent Humberstone said police and protective service officers would continue to have a presence across the public transport network even though the operation had concluded.
The operation ran from May 24 to June 6 and saw police adopt an educative approach.
Those without a face mask were offered one and people who rejected it and deliberately failed to comply with the chief health officer’s directions were slapped with a $200 fine.

Police said the fourth state lockdown announced on May 28 – in the middle of the operation – resulted in a significant decrease of commuter traffic on public transport.
Victorians are still required to wear a mask indoors, including public transport, and outside where social distancing can’t be maintained.
