Also means the blade unit and the drive mechanism isn't being pounded by road traffic all the time so will have fewer 'maintenance issues'. It's quite a common technique now internationally to move the actual switch out of the main traffic flow.

The points were moved out of the intersection in the same way as at St Kilda - I suspect mainly for safety reasons.
