A Winter's Day in the GTCOTS

Now I know you've all been clamouring to know why there were Toorak- and West Coburg-bound trams in Victoria Street yesterday.
The reason is that the intersection of William and La Trobe Streets was closed to all tram traffic and vehicular traffic was severely curtailed.
The reason posted online on the YT site was "upgrade works at the intersection of La Trobe and William streets in readiness for E-class trams running on Route 58".

There was extensive work on the approach tram tracks on all four arms of the intersection. A large deep trench had been cut between the tracks. Some bare copper wire was noted poking out of the trench and lots of orange conduit was being installed. Asking one of the crew, I was informed that they were installing power operated remote control points because the "E class drivers can't/won't get out of their cabs to change the points<g!> ". That probably explains the thick copper wire as a ground return.

Here looking south in William Street towards the intersection of La Trobe Street. Note the copper cable at right and the slots cut in the concrete between the tracks. Lots of orange conduit.

Closer to the intersection the standard workforce arrangement of 5:1 is in view as wiring continues in the pit between the tracks. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think there are new point indicators on the pole to the left of the tracks.

Looking westwards along La Trobe Street towards William Street, a Kubota is digging out the blocks of cut concrete from between the approach track.

Close up showing the cut and removed blocks. Have they cut the sleepers (whether concrete or steel)? I can' remember nor find any photos of the intersection reconstruction but the cut blocks look thicker than one that just occupies the volume from the top of the sleepers to the top of the track. If the sleepers have been cut, are they relying on the concrete to hold the tracks in gauge?

Enjoy.
