The Victorian Railways' Sandringham to Black Rock tramway never carried a lot of passengers.

In 1934, the VR tried out one-man operation using Y1 613, borrowed from the MMTB.

They liked it so much that they commissioned the MMTB to convert their two newest bogie cars to the same layout.  VR51 was altered at Preston in 1934 and 50 was converted in 1938.

Doug Colquhoun caught 50 at Black Rock in 1955.  It's a typical example of the quality of his photos.

The tramway closed in 1956 and the two one-man cars were converted to broad gauge and transferred to the Brighton line.

They were never used in passenger traffic due to union objections - except for a single tour organised by the AETA
