The sign at left (indicated by the 'fickle finger of fate') tells motorists to Give Way to the turning tram - which is oncoming at this point and on a sharp curve as it rounds the eastern end of the cathedral..

It's the prime tourist area and the bus driver may well have been unfamiliar with the complexity of this narrow section.
