Lilydale train station pub: Lilydale VRI hidden on train platform. Kimberley Seedy March 7, 2021
We’re a city famous for our hidden laneway bars, but did you know there’s a pub tucked away at a train station in Melbourne’s outer east?
Lilydale & Yarra Valley Leader After a long train trip, commuters in Melbourne’s outer east don’t have to go far for a well-earnt drink.
A secret bar is tucked away on platform 2 at Lilydale station.
The Victorian Railways Institute bar opened in the 1970s, with the heritage-listed space previously used as refreshment rooms.
But many people weren’t aware the pub existed until TikTok user ragnarthedon shared his amazement at finding it in a video that has now been viewed more than 22,000 times.
The social club and bar is open on the station platform every Friday from 2pm for members and the public to enjoy a drink with friends.
John Smith, who runs the bar with mate Darren Gloury, said people were constantly amazed to discover the drinking hole at the station.
“Every week we will get someone come in and say ‘I didn’t know this was here, I’ve never seen it before,’” he said.
Mr Smith said Lilydale was the only train station on the metropolitan network that had a licenced premises.
He the bar was previously used as refreshment rooms for travellers, dating back to World War I, when electric trains used to come to Lilydale, before steam trains took people on to the Yarra Valley.
“People would come in here and have a couple of drinks, a cup of tea and sandwiches, then they would get the stream train to Warburton or Healesville,” he said.
“In those days if you lived in Melbourne and said you were going to Warburton for a holiday people would say ‘Gee, you’re going that far out?”
The pub also has a pool table and courtyard, with an outdoor fire for the cooler months.
“It’s not The Ritz … but it has got a good atmosphere,” Mr Smith said.
“Darren and I often say we could write a book about all the characters we’ve met over the years here.”
Box Hill South man Richard Godbehere dropped in for a drink at the bar with his mate after a bike ride to Yarra Junction.
“Where else could you enjoy a drink on a Friday afternoon on a train platform?” he said.
The Level Crossing Removal Authority is in the process of removing the Lilydale level crossing, but Mr Smith said they had been reassured the bar would remain at the station.

* They wonder why some areas don’t progress ... pub at a train station
* Is it a train station with a pub or a pub with a train station? I seem to remember seeing quite a few many years ago.
* This is a bar run by railway people for railway people.  Railway enthusiasts are in the know, and use it often for events (booklaunchings, social events).  Quite apart from the drinks, it houses an amazing collection of memorabilia.  We used it for a party night when hosting a group of railway enthusiasts from Germany touring our state and nation.  There could be more of these, but modern management won't allow.  Ballarat comes close.  Once upon a time there were lots more, but they belong to a lost world.
* The 'secret bar' that has a 'Bar Open' sign out the front. Doesn't seem very secret if there is a sign sitting bang out the front telling you there is a bar there.
* Once an Aussie is in a pub, he/she doesn't care WHERE it is!
* Lilydale is a great town with a fantastic history, The Gateway to the Yarra Valley. Happy if you never visit us.
* There use to be a bar at Warragul station. Did a roaring business on Saturday’s when the footy and cricket was on in Melbourne....Packed to the rafters that bar!
* I remember it well back in my younger days. Was like the crush at 6 o’clock closing!
* Nothing new here, if you live here, like we do. It also has the usual drunks, which we are not proud off. Lilydale also has plenty of bottle shops, soup kitchens, beggars at the station, and violence.
* a sign of the times, most suburbs have all of the things you mentioned, “the soup kitchen” as you call it does a great job for those down on their luck.
* Yes the soup kitchen does a great job, but have you sat waiting for a bus once you are off the train and been harassed by beggars that don't take no for an answer.  Lilydale is dirty, full of nail salons, "massage" shops, bottle shops galore, homeless people camped out at the park's toilet block.  It's got worse over the years.  It's not a place to bring up your kids.  And now much of the green is going to make way for thousands of tiny houses.
* not exactly a go-to location
* why not? I bet there's plenty who now go to try it out? I'd call it a destination.
* The bar on Lilydale station, I can remember it in the 1950. It was a long bar that travelled almost the length of the room, beautiful polished wood. I remember seeing part of the bar in an ex railway workers home in1990s and recognized it. He had collectables that would have come from behind the bar as well. The old chap would be gone now I hope his son saved it, It was about three meters long the curved end of the bar. I don't know when they altered it never asked, but his son confirmed it was from Lilydale Station.
* I've known about this for many years and have never seen it open
* Although I don't drink will definitely check it out next time I'm in Victoria
* There is a bar at Middle Brighton station.
* Typical of today's generation.
* We need to keep these secret pubs and cafes. They are a window into,a forgotten world. Too often when train stations are redeveloped, these areas are lost.
* What about at southern cross a real forgotten gem
* agree, it's a great pub ..
* Yes, compulsory stop after a Saints victory at Docklands Stadium!
* Network Bar Ripper Though went there tonight about 830 and it was closed Also the old upstairs Club that used to be above Spencer St Station in the 70’s was another good last stop before catching the country train
* I did not know this was there.
* I know where I am going for a rave this coming Friday
* Can buy drinks on your Myki Card?
* should be one at every station
* yes and just imagine the idiots you would then have on the trains as there is enough of them now
* Passengers are obnoxious enough when they are sober.  Wait till they get a skin full and then turn their radios up with their wrap crap.  Fur will fly.

Sat.7.3.21 Melbourne 'Herald Sun' Danger on the tracks. WES HOSKING
Principal train driver Marnee Moore, part of a team supporting drivers when someone has been hit.
Rail trespassing rises to deadly extent TRESPASSING on Melbourne’s rail network has surged 40 per cent over the past five years, amid concern about senseless losses of life.
Dog walkers and runners unwittingly straying on to tracks, hurried schoolkids and commuters darting in front of trains and graffiti vandals are all dicing with death.
More than 3500 trespassers were last year recorded across Melbourne’s train system, up from 2500 in 2016. And 36 were struck by trains.
Metro Trains general manager of safety operations Adrian Rowland said: “We’re very aware of the increased number and we encourage all our people to report it.
“At the moment we get pretty much 10 a day,’’ he said. “It’s a real issue for our drivers.”
So far this year 555 trespassers were recorded and six people hit — at least three of those incidents in the last fortnight proved fatal.
CCTV and fencing were among initiatives to combat the problem.
“Anybody on a track, for our drivers, is a potential safety risk,’’ Mr Rowland said
“And unfortunately a lot of them have seen situations where people have either been very close to being hit, or have been hit.”
Principal train driver Marnee Moore, who works in a specialist team dispatched to relieve and support train drivers when someone is hit, said she’d experienced the ordeal first-hand.
In her first year as a qualified driver more than a decade ago, Ms Moore’s train struck a woman deliberately trying to be hit.
“Personally, there’s not a day goes by that you forget,’’ she said.
“You can’t drive through that section without the thought of the circumstances coming to your mind. It stays with you forever.
“There are some drivers who can come to terms with the incident enough to continue working.
“Unfortunately there are some circumstances where despite their best efforts, and getting all the support and help they can get access to, they simply can’t get in that driver’s seat again. “The impact on drivers — and not just them but their families as well — is huge. You wouldn’t wish it on anybody,” she said.
Public Transport Minister Ben Carroll said: “People who trespass on the train network aren’t just risking their lives and huge disruption to our transport system — the trauma these incidents can cause for train drivers who witness them is immense.
“As more people return to public transport, we don’t want to see an increase in this dangerous behaviour.”
The number of trespassers recorded last year was just 180 fewer than in 2019 despite coronavirus reducing Melbourne train patronage as much as 90 per cent.
