RE: Hobart Trolleybus photo - 409

Tony,

Two examples of Hobart trolley buses survive in an ‘as withdrawn’ condition at the Tasmanian Transport Museum at Glenorchy, Hobart, a 1942 Leyland ‘Canton ’(No 74) and a 1952 ‘BUT’ (No 235). I understand that a Launceston trolley bus also survives but little is known about it because it’s the property of the Queen Victoria Museum and not part of any transport museum.

As for the abandonment of trolley buses in Tasmania, it was as if there was an air of inevitability about it and it just happened, aided by a number of factors.

Thank you Roger. That was a couple of years or so after I visited Hobart for the first time. As you may gather by now, they made quite an impression on me! It was as if modern transit had come to Australia at a time when fleets of all modes around the country were ageing and the horrible British diesel bus was the only replacement on the ascendancy. The new Harris trains in Melbourne were the only equivalent challenger in modernity at the time. The Hobart buses were even nicer than the remaining trolleybuses elsewhere in Australia. Giving them up in a state with hydro power and replacing them with diesel was one of those decisions as stupid as the Wellington trolleybus debacle.

It was also the start of a lifelong electric bus "journey" for me, finally coming to fruition again in Australia! Have any surviving museum examples of those buses been restored as far as working condition? That would be worth a trip to Tassie on its own to see.

Tony,

The photograph appeared in Ian Cooper’s book ‘Tasmania’s Trolley Buses’ which records that it was taken outside the Mercury building during the morning peak on Dec 27 1962.

The photograph isn’t credited to anyone in particular so it was probably one of Ian’s.

What year is the colour photo with the three buses Roger? They were such great buses, better then the rubbish we had as government buses in Sydney at the time. Good-looking and very nice to ride. Made a strong impression on me.

Mal ‘s identification is one block out, Ian’s photo 409 is in Macquarie St.

The two trolley buses are at the stop outside the Town Hall (out of view) and the Art Deco building is (was) the Mercury Newspaper office. The former Hydro Electric building (now the City Council Centre) is also in the Art Deco style and very similar in appearance to the Mercury office.

Thanks Roger,

A little knowledge (on my part) is a dangerous thing!
