Re: Re: Why cities planning to spend billions on light rail should look again at what buses can do

Buses do need a good road to be absolutely comfortable. Perth's roads are
maintained in excellent condition (must be all that mining money!) and,
yes, the buses are very smooth to ride there and the drivers considerate.
Brian is right about Sydney, a lot of heavily-used, inadequately-maintained
rough road surfaces and a tradition among govvie drivers that they drive
full pelt over everything regardless of conditions, never mind the
passengers and the taxpayers are paying for the maintenance of the bus of
course. Private bus services have typically been more conscious of their
passengers and looking after the bus (and they are private operators in
Perth too). So you need a combination of good roads and private operation
to get the best out of a bus for passengers.

I remember years ago when I was attending Sydney Tech watching a DGT
Worldmaster rounding the corner from Harris St to Broadway without slowing
down. His rear wheels were tramping sideways across the road but he made
it. I recall Richard saying that in the 1960s a lot of former Sydney tram
drivers were then driving the buses and they drove them like trams! My dad
who was an engineer in the DGT in the 50s said the government drivers were
reckless and often got into accidents.
