No, definitely State Savings Bank of Victoria (which subsequently underwent the indignity of being taken over by the Commonwealth Bank but long after CR was its tenant). If I remember correctly, it has a foundation stone bearing the name of Premier H.S.W. Lawson. The building shown would more likely be an ex-Commonwealth Bank if it housed the head office of Commonwealth Railways as the railway and the bank were both owned by the Commonwealth Government back then. Does anyone have a photo of this bank in operation to confirm?

The hotel is the Batman's Hill on Collins, which occupies the building of the former Batman's Hill Hotel (with a frontage on Spencer Street, facing the former VR Head Office) and the building of a former branch of the Savings Bank of Victoria, one of the upper floors of which was the home for many years of the head office of Commonwealth Railways. Together with bigger buildings behind them, they form a great background for a tramscape (provided you don't mind the tram being dwarfed).

Mal and all,
I mixed up Swanston and Spencer Streets. The hotel I stayed in is a former bank building, on the corner of Collins and Spencer Streets. You can sit downstairs in the former banking chamber, which is now the restaurant and lounge, and watch the trams (or their pantographs anyway) turn the corner from Collins into Spencer Street.
My apologies for any confusion I caused.

It's not a hotel I am aware of.
The building on the NW corner of Elizabeth and Collins St is the rather bland white office block visible above the first articulation joint in the attached pic of 5001.
It has a bank branch on the ground floor.
