Ian Saxon’s photograph of No 116 is interesting for several reasons.

No 116 is outbound at Bathurst St carrying an advertisement on its apron for H Jones & Co’s IXL jam. This company advertised extensively and was amongst the first to advertise on the new Hobart electric trams of 1893.

Eagle-eyed devotees of Art Deco might discern that the white building behind No 116 (Cox Brothers) is indeed of that style built in 1938, but demolished in the early 1970s to make way for a hotel.

The street looks to be awash after a sudden downpour so perhaps that’s why most of the saloon windows are open.
