Being away from Melbourne when the Z’s, A’s, B’s, C’s and D’s were introduced I was eager to travel on the new trams when visiting I 2002. Off the train from Warnambool I eagerly caught a C in Collins St. To Kew and then aD to Malvern. To my amazement the C was like riding inside a 44 gallon drum for noise and swayed around like the Cable Tram in Portland. Hardly a good example of Tram development after 180 years. The D was not much better and as well had terrible seating around large protrusions over the wheels with only half a seat to sit on. As well there was no forward view for passengers making it difficult to see your location until after the stop had passed As well there was no reference within the tram of transfer points to the other tram routes crossing. At least I had some knowledge of these points from 30 years before although many landmarks were changed. I pity any visitors with no knowledge.

To be fair, at the time that M-tram ordered the Combinos and Yarr
ordered the original Citadis trams they were the current design.
The Combino Plus (later called "Avenio" after the Combino name became
sales poison) was a later design to overcome some of Siemens' design
problems.
IMHO the biggest problem of the Siemens design is the severe level of
intrusion into the passenger compartment by the bogies - a problem
shared with the CAF design but overcome in other designs by (in order of
success - low to high) Alstom, Bombardier and Skoda.
