The location is The Spit terminus, southern side. Trams ran from here to Cremorne Wharf until 1956 (as well as to Milsons Point, later to Wynyard until 1958). The colour scheme on the trams dates the picture as being before about 1918 when the olive and fawn colour scheme was introduced.

At the bottom left of the picture the rails at the start of the balloon loop can be seen curving sharply to the left. This loop had to be closed in 1924 when the first Spit Bridge was opened.

The lamp is a kerosene tail light. I was not aware that they were in use this early.

I don't have a login for SLNSW, but if anyone else does, then I'm sure they would appreciate the date correction information.
